The Complete Rainwaters in the 1900 census
Reading these records
The first line of each record gives the following information: District, county, state, page number,
line number, dwelling number, family number. I always use the stamped page numbers found in the
upper right hand corner of the original census pages. These are stamped on every other page, so
the pages without numbers have the number from the preceeding page plus the letter B.
The data is given in the following format: Name, relationship, gender and race, birth month and year, age, marital status, if married for how long, birthplace of self and both parents, occupation, miscellaneous notes. The line for the wife includes two additional fields following number of years married. These are Mother of how many children (B#) and number of children living (L#).
Printable blank forms for the 1900 census are available from Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com.
I used a combination of Soundex rolls and Ancestry.com's online index to identify the location of Rainwater census records. Those states based on Ancestry.com alone may be less complete than those based on a combination of both indexes. Unless indicated otherwise, the transcriptions were made by me from the microfilmed originals, T-623 series.
