Early evidence for the Chance family of Maryland's Eastern Shore

This web page started its life as a my personal attempt to lay out and correlate all of the collected evidence for the Eastern Shore Chance family. Unlike some Eastern Shore families that settled in a county and stayed put for 200 years, the Chances spread out over a five county area. They are primarily found in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Talbot and Queen Anne's, although a few show up in other locations. This seems to be a result of Richard Chance Sr.'s many land purchases and the subsequent disbursal of this land to his children at his death.

While it has been possible for me to directly trace some members of the Chance family from 1668 to present day, others are still a tangled mess. And so I am offering this document for other Chance researchers to use, correct, comment upon, add to, argue with, and if we are lucky, determine the connections between what are now just names on a page. Be forewarned that this document contains speculation on my part about some of these connections. The words " might be the son of . . . " are a warning that a statement is speculation and not fact! In every case, the information presented here is connected to a source document, and the reference numbers on the date line are links to the source list at the bottom of this page.

Please Note: Due to the limited time I have available to answer personal email, I no longer respond to queries about the Chance family outside the geographic area of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Such queries are better made at the Chance Family Genealogy Forum on Genforum.
